Typically, a vehicle generation remains on the market for five to seven years before being replaced. However, some models manage to stand the test of time, as is the case with the Mitsubishi RVR, which was first launched in 2011.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it proves that its original concept was solid. Not to mention that the model has received several updates throughout its long career. In fact, there are even several advantages to the situation. First, the RVR remains one of the most affordable vehicles in its class. Experience also plays a key role, as all the necessary adjustments have been made over the years, allowing it to shine when it comes to reliability. Too often, manufacturers move on to a new generation before they have had the chance to resolve common issues. This gives the RVR a significant advantage over the competition.

Lineup and Pricing

The 2027 Mitsubishi RVR lineup consists of six different versions, starting with the front-wheel-drive ES model. The latter carries a starting price of $25,278, which is very affordable for a modern vehicle. Next is the ES with all-wheel drive at $27,278. The SE AWC and SEL AWC versions follow with starting prices of $29,778 and $31,998, respectively. The Noir AWC continues the lineup at $33,498. Finally, the GT AWC sits at the top of the range at $35,958.

Category and Competition

Subcompact SUVs are taking up an increasingly important place in the market. Their price range and level of equipment are similar to what compact SUVs offered about a decade ago. The RVR is the oldest model in its segment, that's a fact, but it also has some strong arguments in its favour, which makes it a very interesting option.

Competitors: Buick Envista, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Nissan Kicks, Subaru Crosstrek, Toyota Corolla Cross, Volkswagen Taos.

Design and Technology

Even though the platform, and therefore the overall shape of the model, hasn't changed since 2011, the Mitsubishi RVR has managed to remain youthful and up to date thanks to several small updates over the years. The model also offers some attractive colours.

The RVR's age is most noticeable inside the cabin. The ergonomics are well thought out and the controls are simple, but all you have to do is climb aboard just about any other model to realize that the RVR's interior design belongs to another era.

Performance

The Japanese automaker's small SUV offers two powertrain options, starting with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive comes standard, while all-wheel drive is available as an option.

Starting with the SE version, the RVR gets a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine producing 168 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque, which makes things a little more interesting. Here, all-wheel drive and the CVT come standard.

Weaknesses

It is an old platform with aging technology. There is no sporty or electrified version.

Strengths

The 2027 Mitsubishi RVR offers excellent value for money and ranks among the most affordable models on the market. It is reliable and inexpensive to maintain. Its all-wheel-drive system is also very effective.

Signature Element

The RVR is an ideal vehicle for buyers on a tighter budget who want to make as few compromises as possible.

Final Word

Some models have already gone through two new generations since the RVR was launched in 2011, but that doesn't make it any less interesting. In fact, the RVR has experienced a slight resurgence in popularity in recent years, proving that the model certainly still has a place in today's market.
